Willy Porter tickets

Local favorite Willy Porter of Mequon, Wisconsin will be playing a show on Thursday, February 11th, 2010. Willy Porter has been in the music industry since 1990. He has released many albums since then. While you may not recognize Willy Porter's name, you may recognize some of the major names that he has opened with. Such as: Jeff beck, Tori Amos, The Cranberries, and Jethro Tull just to name a few.

Fine line tickets go on sale next Wednesday, January 6th for the Willy Porter show. You can check out his songs on his myspace page!

Other than that there has not been any major concert announcements at the Fine Line this week. Bands and booking agents are taking a break for the holidays but stay tuned for concert announcements as the holidays come to an end.

Have a safe New Year!

New Years Eve tickets

Still haven't made plans for New Years Eve? Fine Line tickets are available now for their New Years Eve show featuring Trampled By Turtles. The price Tag on Fine Line tickets for this show is quite a bit steeper than First Avenue's cover, but the Fine Line's does cover a bit more amenities. Such as: the cover price includes the beverages for the night at Fine Line, First Avenue's does not. Despite the heavy price tag, one flat rate for all the alcohol you can drink in a night sounds like a good deal. Maybe not the best idea, but it will at least keep you from dropping hundreds of dollars in bar tabs, right?

Trampled By Turtles is a band from Duluth, MN that is known around the area for being a great live band. They certainly attract crowds and pack night clubs with jam band fans of all ages.

Fine Line tickets are on sale now for their New Years Eve party, the cover almost doubles at the door so it pays to buy your Fine Line tickets ahead of time.

Gomez tickets

English rockers, Gomez, are embarking on a 2010 US tour in support of their new album, "A New Tide." One of those stops will be at the Fine Line Music Cafe this winter on Saturday, March 6th, 2010.

You may remember Gomez from that Panasonic tv campaign where they covered "I Think It's Getting Better" or maybe their songs "Catch Me Up" and "Little Pieces" which was featured on an episode of Grey's Anatomy.

Gomez gained their distribution in the United States by signing to Dave Matthews' label, ATO Records. At that time, Gomez began to tour extensively to gain exposure to new fans. Gomez played at Coachella and Bonarro Music Festivals and have toured with my personal favorite, Ben Kweller, Cake, and Dave Matthews band just to name a few.

Fine Line tickets for the Gomex show go on sale Saturday, January 9th, 2010. No opening act has been announced, however, this is an 18+ show.

Cracker Tickets

The Fine Line is on fire with show announcements!
David Lowery and Johnny Hickman of Cracker have just announced a show at the Fine Line at the beginning of February.
If you are reading this and you have not heard of Cracker you my fellow blogger are sadly mistaking! There songs "Low" "Teen Angst" "Get off This" and my personal favorite "Euro Trash Girl." If that still doesn't ring a bell check out YouTube - I know you know the jams!

And if you are a Camper Van Beethoven fan you will also recognize the name as David Lowery was the founding member of that band as well.

This tour they will be doing an unplugged and acoustic version of their songs, David Lowery and Johnny Hickman will not have a full backing band: they are the band!

Fine Line tickets are on sale now for this event. Cracker has a pretty dedicated fan base so if you want to go to the show you may want to purchase your Fine Line tickets now!

Everclear Tickets

Finally! It looks like the Fine Line has added a couple of shows to their calendar! And even shows that I might go to, one of them just announced is Everclear - one of my all time favorite bands. I have been a fan since I was in 7th grade, I've stuck by them through all the line up changes, the behind the music, etc. I always go and see them. I hope I will be able to make it to this show!

Everclear is touring in support of their new album (appropriately titled) "In a Different Light."

Everclear has went through several line up changes over the years, with the only original member in it being founder Art Alexakis. The other current members are pretty much hired musicians as follows:
- Johnny Hawthorn – rhythm guitar, backing vocals
- Freddy Herrera – bass guitar, backing vocals
- Sasha Smith – keyboards, piano
- Jordan Plosky – drums percussion

Fine Line tickets for this event go on sale Saturday, December 19th. If you want to go I would buy your Everclear tickets now - they will sell out.

See you at the show!

Shannon Curfman tickets

North Dakota's songstress, Shannon Curfman will be in playing a show at the Fine Line on Friday, February 12th. Born in North Dakota, Shannon now resides in Minneapolis. The list of musucians that she has played with is not one to scoff at: John Mellencamp, Buddy Guy, George Thorogood and The Indigo Girls to name a few. And in the past her albums have been produced by Johnny Lang, another North Dakota native that loves to sing the blues.

Shannon Curfman has been recording tracks for her follow up album to "Loud Guitars, Big Suspicions" which was supposed to be released in summer 2009. This may be the show where Shannon showcases some of her new material before her album comes out.

Fine Line tickets go on sale this weekend for Shannon Curfman's show. The reviews of her live performances have been great so buy your Fine Line tickets now so you are not out on this fun show!

Brian Culbertson tickets

So if you have looked at the Fine Line Music Calendar recently, you will see that there is not much going on national concert wise. The only upcoming event that caught my eye, Brian Culbertson. Brian Culbertson is a jazz musician from Decatur, Illinois. This particular show is entitled "A Soulful Christmas" so concertgoers can expect a holiday themed set list.

Fine Line tickets are on sale now for the Brian Culbertson show on Wednesday, November 9th. I am not sure of the live show following that Brian Culbertson has, however, holiday themed shows are always great sellers and as the date approaches availability becomes scarce. During the holiday season people are looking for things to do, something to add to a special occasion, etc.

In the mean time, where on earth are all of the good shows at the Fine Line? I know its not my favorite place to see a show at, but there has not been a show I've wanted to see there in ages! What is going on?

Gear Daddies tickets on sale Monday!

The Gear Daddies have just announced their first annual holiday show of the year at the Fine Line. Fine Line tickets for this event usually sell out so fast the Gear Daddies add another show. So if you want to go be sure to buy your Fine Line tickets now before they are gone.

Martin Zellar
and the gang always have their holiday show at the Fine Line. They have not released an album in quite some time, however, their holiday season shows are always something that local music fans look forward to. The Gear Daddies have not played a local show since their Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater show last summer, which was also a hot ticket.

Fine Line Tickets Available Now!

I was trolling through the upcoming events at the Fine Line and I noticed that there are not too many. Fine Line tickets are on sale now for the following shows:

Vertical Horizon - Monday, November 9th

The Script - Thursday, November 12th

Spencer Day - Tuesday, November 17th

Brian Culbertson - Wednesday, December 9th

The Fine Line's Concert Calendar looks a little lacking during the month of December, too. I wonder what is going on? I know that the Fine Line rents out their space to people who want to have corporate parties or maybe their wedding reception. Maybe with the (omg, sorry, but I am going to say it!) HOLIDAYS the month of December is already spoken for. Usually December is a pretty busy concert month, everyone wants to get their tour finished so they can go home and rest over the first of the year.

The Script with Romantica

Thursday, November 12th local band Romantica is opening for the Ireland duo, The Script. It is fitting that they are on tour together and certainly no mistake, Romantica has a deep Irish heritage which influences the majority of their songs.

I have actually seen Romantica. 2 times ago when Ryan Adams was in town they opened for him. Although I am a little confused, all of the information I have read about Romantica lists them as a band, however, when I saw them it was just one guy and one guitar. I figured something must have been special about him seeing as Ryan had no supporting act announced for his tour and Romantica was a last minute addition.

Fine Line tickets for this show are on sale now. I would expect a big turnout for this show. Romantica is local and The Script had a bigger single a while back. Both acts not my taste, but I am sure tickets will sell fast!

Are you a Travis fan?

If you have ever listened to Cities 97 you have no doubt heard that horrifyingly annoying song called "Jupiter" by late 90's / early 2000's adult contemporary band, Travis. Well, it seems that the band as a whole has taken a break and two of the members are touring together: Fran Healy and Andy Dunlop.
They are calling the tour "A Chronological Acoustical Journey Through the Travis Back Catalogue: Laugh Out Loud Stories, Scottish Accents, Handsome Scottish Men, Naked Torsos." Since they are the only guys on the road, the songs will all be acoustic. They are also using this tour as a means to test new Travis material to smaller audiences.
I read a review of the Austin show and it said that there was a slide show part of the concert where Fran and Andy took turns telling stories. I suppose if you were a big Travis fan this would be a dream come true!

Fine Line tickets are on sale now for this event. I am not sure how crazy of a ticket this is going to be - I do know that Travis has a huge following - they have had quite a few hit singles. If you want to go buy your Fine Line tickets now.

Plans for Halloween?

If you are looking for something fun and out of the usual party scene for Halloween this year, the Fine Line may be your place. They are having their annual Masquerade Ball with the New Orleans band, the Radiators. The cover is pretty cheap if you buy Fine Line tickets ahead of time (I hear they are more the day of the show).

I have not been to the Fine Line Masquerade Ball. The last 2 years I have went to First Avenue's Halloween Party. I can tell you from experience that is a great time! They have Thriller dancers (which I am sure will be even more popular this year as will the Michael Jackson costumes) and there is a costume contest. Last year the group of guys who dressed up as the Ghost Busters. Not only did they have the backpacks and jumpsuits down to perfection, but they also arrived in an almost exact replica of the station wagon that the Ghostbusters drove around in.

Both Fine Line tickets and First Avenue tickets are on sale for their Halloween celebrations. First Avenue's is 18+ and the Fine Line's is 21+

A Fine Frenzy frenzies up the Fine Line next month!

The former VH1 'You Outta Know Artist' A Fine Frenzy (Alison Sudol) will be in town next month for an almost sold out show at the Fine Line Music Cafe. Fine Line tickets are on sale now for the show, but A Fine Frenzy has sold out every show played here in Minneapolis, so buy Fine Line tickets asap if you want to go!

A Fine Frenzy is currently on tour in support of her new album, "Bomb in a Birdcage." Born in Seattle, Washington, Sudol graduated high school and started college at the age of 16. It was shortly after her completion of college she went to Austin's South by Southwest Festival where she opened for the Stooges. Gaining an audience at one of the most prestigious music festivals in the world her debut album, "One Cell in the Sea" sold reasonably well.

If you are wondering where her name "A Fine Frenzy" is from you may recognize it from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Thursday, November 5th at the Fine Line Music Cafe - with special guests Landon Pig and Among the Oak and Ash // 18+ Show

I won't be making it to this one - Snoop Dogg AND Har Mar are in town on the same night!

Sold Out Show: Ingrid Michaelson

If are looking for Ingrid Michaelson tickets at the Fine Line Music Cafe next week you may be standing outside in the cold! The show is totally sold out - there are no Fine Line tickets to be found for this show.

Ingrid Michaelson is known for her song "The Way I Am" which has been featured in 'Scrubs' 'Grey's Anatomy' 'One Tree Hill' and an Old Navy ad campaign. This could explain her popularity - she sold out the 1000+ spaces in the Fine Line relatively fast.

Ingrid Michaelson is on tour in support of her new album "Everybody" which was released this past August. It has done reasonably well, making it to number 18 on the charts! For a little girl from New York writing songs and touring she is doing very well for herself!

I won't be making it to this show, there are no tickets, but good luck to you!

Ingrid Michaelson, Wednesday, October 21st at the Fine Line Music Cafe - Matthew Perryman Jones opens the show 18+

Moby has been moved to the Fine Line

In the wake of the Myth's indefinite closing it looks like the Moby concert has been moved to the Fine Line Music Cafe. This is quite a difference in expected attendance, the Myth probably holds around 3000 people whereas the Fine Line holds only about 1000. Somehow though, Fine Line tickets are available for the show which is Thursday, October 1st. Myth Nightclub tickets will be honored for this event.

Moby is on tour in support of his new album, "Wait for Me" which was released last week.

It is too bad that the Myth is closed, it creates so many headaches and confusion for promoters and fans that just want to go to a show. And not to mention that the Fine Line is going to be so packed for this show! The show will be a little too packed for my taste, so if you're going have fun and be sure to buy your Fine Line tickets as soon as possible.

Pete Yorn is just around the corner

Time flies when you're having fun in the summer, right?
It was just awhile ago that Pete Yorn announced not one, but 2 shows at the Fine Line and that is already next week. Fine Line Music Cafe tickets are on sale now for the both shows next week. I don't think either one is sold out, but they will so buy your Fine Line tickets soon!

Be sure to check out Pete Yorn and Scartlett Johanson's "Break Up" album of duets this fall, I am sure you will get an earful about the special side project at the shows next week!

See you at the show!

R&B singer Montell Jordan has just announced a show in September at the Fine Line.
If you find yourself asking "Who is Montell Jordan?" I assure you, you have heard a Montell Jordan - if you have ever watched a movie with a party scene in it there is no doubt "This Is How We Do It" was played.

In case you cannot remember here is the video (I couldn't get the video to post in my blog so all I have is the link!)

Fine Line Music Cafe tickets go on sale Friday for the Montell Jordan show!

Get Your Two Way Monologues Ready!!

Norway's one, the only, Sondre Lerche just announced a show at the Fine Line for a show on September 20th - which is only one week before the VIKINGS HOME OPENER!!! That of course will be a big deal because Brett Favre will a Viking. Ok, I know nothing has been announced yet, but come on, they bought a condo in Edina! What more proof do you need!?

Anyways, back to Sondre Lerche. He will be touring in support of his new album 'Hearbeat Radio' on September 8th. Fine Line tickets for Sondre Lerche's show go on sale tomorrow.

If you think his name sounds familiar you may recognize his name and face from the movie 'Dan in Real Life' where he not only did the entire soundtrack, but also is in the movie with has band during the wedding scene at the end of the movie. I was pleastanly suprised not only how good the movie was, but it was nice seeing one of my favorite musicians in a movie. The year that I lived in Milwaukee and kept to myself I listened to a lot of Sondre Lerche!

See you at the show!

Crash, I'm the Last Splash

Hold your hats! Twin sisters Kim and Kelly Deal are bringing their Breeders act to Minneapolis. Even if you're not quite sure who the Breeders are, you for sure know the name Kim Deal. She was in that little band you might have heard of called the Pixies.

The Breeders released Fate Fatal in April of this year and are touring in support of it. Fine Line tickets are on sale now for this show.

Fun trivia fact: Kelly Deal used to live in St. Paul for a brief period of time in late 1990's. AND she was in a band called 'Last Hard Men' with none other than Sebastian Bach and Jimmy Chamberlin. They recorded an album in 1997, however, it was not released until 2001 because they could not find a label to release it.
I wonder if Kelly Deal still lives here? Regardless, I'm sure she will have a lot of local friends on the Fine Line guest list.

Not One, But Two Pete Yorns!

As if one show wasn't enough - Pete Yorn will be playing not one but two shows at the Fine Line. Pete Yorn is touring in support of his new album "Back and Forth" which was released on the 23rd.
I had no idea that Pete Yorn was so popular. Apparently he has a huge live show following that necessitates two back to back shows at the Fine Line. This is surprising to me because he has not had a single that has recieved any air play since his "Music for the Morning After" album - which I will admit, I totally owned a copy of. I had a huge crush on Pete Yorn when that album came out ... I couldn't resist.

To further prove his fan base here is an interesting piece of information: during the iTunes pre-sale, BACK AND FOURTH sold 11,672 digital copies, driving the album to Top 10 status (reached No. 4 on iTunes Album Chart) before it had even been officially released.

I stand corrected. Perhaps Pete Yorn will sell out both shows at the Fine Line. Maybe there are that many people that still listen to him! In that case it would be in your best interest to decide on the show you want to go to buy your Fine Line tickets accordingly. Apparently Pete Yorn tickets are a hot commodity.

Catch Pete Yorn at the Fine Line Wednesday, August 12th and Thursday, August 13th.

Basilica Block Party Battle of the Bands!

The Basilica Block Party is July 10th and 11th this year. There are actually a few pretty good acts this year for Basilica, they must have fired the person doing the booking the past few years. Because the past few years the Basilica Block Party has had some real clunkers as far as headliners, but this year they have the Black Crowes, The Jayhawks, Counting Crows, The Hold Steady and Tapes n Tapes.

But before the party even begins there is a contest at the Fine Line Music Cafe that has been going on and will continue for the next few weeks for a spot on one of the stages at the Block Party.

So, Thursday, June 18th there will a round of Battle of the Bands at the Basilica Block Party. Fine Line tickets are not needed for this event, however, there is only a 4 dollar cover at the door. There are three bands competing at this round: Dim Light Shining, Stealing Seconds, & Postina.

If you're looking for something cheap to do on a Thursday night it looks like this is your best bet!

Cheap Cover for a Saturday Night

There are not a lot of great concerts coming to the Fine Line on their upcoming events calendar, but the Fine Line concert calendar is packed with a lot of local shows. If you're looking for something fun to do this coming Saturday that does not involve Grand Ole Days in St. Paul, you can check out the tribute show at the Fine Line. No Fine Line tickets are needed for this show, there is only a $6 cover. For a cover downtown on a Saturday night that is really not that bad!

The cover show on Saturday showcases music from Radiohead, Pink Floyd, and Rush. An interesting line up, I know.
The line ups are as follows:

What's That? A Radiohead Project (check them out here!)

Exit Stage Right (Rush)

The Mad Buggers (Pink Floyd)

The Fine Line calendar is packed with local bands and events so if you are looking to see local talent or looking to find a cheap cover at a bar.

I will be at Treasure Island all weekend, so if you go to the show let me know how it was!

Australian Comedian Coming to the Fine Line

Jim Jeffries, the Australian born comedian will be in Minneapolis for a stand up show on (are you ready for the most futuristic date possible?) Saturday, October 10th! Fine Line tickets for this show go on sale this weekend, but I really don't see the rush for the on sale - the event is months away!

Jim Jeffries is known for his work with BBC Television, starring in such shows as Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Have I Got News For You, Heaven and Earth and 8 out of 10 Cats. Jim Jeffries is currently filming his sitcom The Jim Jeffries Show and has recorded an HBO 1 Hour Comedy Special at the Skirball Center at NYU which will be released later this spring.

Fine Line Music Cafe tickets
will be available this weekend for the show - he sounds like a funny guy - don't miss out!

See 'Rapper's Delight' Live! One night only!!

There hasn't been a lot of fun shows at the Fine Line lady, sorry blog, I do what I can! I did see a show coming that did catch my eye for pure nostalgia reasons, which is the Sugar Hill Gang. I had no idea that they were even still a band, let alone touring! But regardless I am sure it would be fun to see such a staple in the world of rap music.
Everyone knows the Sugar Hill Gang - if you don't remember "Rapper's Delight" from them you for sure remember the part in the Wedding Singer where Ellen Albertine Dow gets on stage in sings "A hip hop a hibby to the hibby, etc." You cannot forget that memorable movie moment of an elderly lady rapping.

Anyways, if you would like to buy Fine Line tickets for this show they are on sale now!

The Fine Line and I are taking a break. End of story.

It has finally happened. I was on a roll there for awhile, having a good relationship with the Fine Line, but it happened. I am now officially on a break with the Fine Line. Our relationship hit a rock last night and unless I really really really love the band I am going to keep my distance. It is really for the best, it saves a world of frustration.
So last night I went to see Peter Bjorn and John at the Fine Line (life was too busy for me to make it there in time for Chairlift - which was too bad because I love the song from the iPod commercial). Fine Line tickets for this show must have sold out because once again you could not move in the Fine Line. I think that the reason the Fine Line differs from First Ave so much is simply the way it is layed out. The Fine Line is a much narrower space making it impossible to see if you're stuck way in the back like Sara and I were last night. Ugh! It just wasn't any fun! Who enjoys standing in the back behind a pole that is blocking your way all the while people are shoving their way past you and hitting your arm every 5 seconds and spilling your beer! Not me. I left before the encore and I didn't even get to hear "young folks."
Frustrating!

Don't get me wrong, I love supporting the Fine Line and the acts that play there by going there as much as I can. But I go to soo many concerts that I have to have some standards!

Next Up: The Sounds at the Varsity!

BJM Show at the Fine Line!

It has taken me a few days to recover from the Brian Jonestown Massacre show last week to say the least. The night ended in a cab ride I don't remember and one hell of a show! The original members (Anton, Matt, and Joel) were all touring this time around. I never thought that I would get to see Joel play the ol' tambourine! But I did! And I got to hear all of the great Matt Hollywood jams and all the Anton jams. I truly cannot tell you how wonderful of a show it was. I wish I could see it again this Thursday! Fine Line tickets for this event were not sold out, however, the Fine Line was packed. You could not even move on the balcony at all.

I have some great pictures, I'll post them when I am back at my computer!

Next up: Peter Bjorn and John on the 21st of April!!!!

Here are some pictures from the very hazy night!

I can't wait to see them again!!

Different Day, same show!

Hello there!
It's been awhile since I've updated, but I'm still going to write about how excited I am to see the Brian Jonestown Massacre next week. One week from today! Whoo hoo!
I have my Fine Line tickets for this show. All of my best friends are going to the show, too. And it's not every day that you get to see your favorite band :)
I really wanted to get the table

Also, on the21st of April Peter Bjorn and John (one of my new favorite bands!) will be in town for a show at the Fine Line. Fine Line tickets for this show will definitely sell out, they have a pretty big following via 89.3 the Current. They are another band that I have fallen for by my satellite radio.

If you are not doing anything on the 26th I HIGHLY suggest you venture down to the Fine Line. You will get the privilege of seeing one of the best bands that no one knows about!

See you there!

Thursday, January 22, 2009

Anton and Co. are coming back!

The mad genius himself, Anton Newcombe / Brian Jonestown Massacre, is coming back to the Fine Line on March 26th.
Everyone knows Anton from the movie, DIG!, but those who can look past the movie and see the true talent behind Anton Newcombe are pleasantly bombarded with one of the most extensive and astonishing music catalogs of today. The band that Anton tours with now does not entrance the audience the way it used to, but it's still a privilege to be in the presence of someone so talented.

In case you haven't noticed, I am a HUGE fan.

Fine Line tickets for this show are going to be A LOT easier to get than last time they were in town. Schell's beer sponsored the event so the ONLY way to get tickets was to go to Schell's Beer sponsored events at certain bars and put your name in a drawing and hope that your name gets drawn. I never won a single ticket! And Schell's Beer is gross! But I got to go anyways, my friends won multiple times!

see you at the show!
Tickets are on sale now!

Fine Line is still Fine

Sorry I haven’t been updating my Fine Line blog much, but let me quiet the rumors that the Fine Line Music Cafe is not doing well. As far as I know the Fine Line is doing just fine. I often have people asking me of cool Minneapolis places to bring out of town guests and the Fine Line Music Cafe always tops my list of recommends. They have quality live music with top notch acoustics and clean modern bathrooms (100 times better than First Ave, trust me!) and the ambiance is relaxing enough to visit with your guests, but definitely not boring.

The Fine Line has good pictures of the clubs inside on their website. Check it out here if you are wondering what to expect.
